"Happy is the person, I thought, who, before dying, has the good fortune to Sail the Aegean Sea."

Nikos Kazatzakis.

GEOGRAPHY & HISTORY

The Cyclades is a group of Greek islands, southeast of the mainland, in the Aegean Sea. The name "Cyclades" refers to the islands forming a circle around Delos, the sacred island of Ancient Greece and birthplace of Apollo, the Ancient Greek god of the Sun and the Arts. Delos is home to some of Greece’s most important archaeological sites.

Indeed, many of the islands hold ancient Greek temples, which contribute into making them amongst the most popular holiday destinations in the world.  The Cyclades are known for their gorgeous sandy beaches, their ancient sites, their rugged landscapes and protected bays, their renounced White & Blue Architecture, their traditional lifestyle and folk music, the warm, hospitable people and the picturesque little Christian Chapels built straight into the side of a cliff or on top of a hill. Their blue-and-white towns are often built right at the edge of a cliff, on top of the highest peak of the island overlooking the Aegean Sea.

The Cyclades comprise about 220 islands, the major ones being Amorgos, Anafi, Andros, Antiparos, Delos, Ios, Kea, Kimolos, Kythnos, Milos, Mykonos, Naxos, Paros, Folegandros, Serifos, Sifnos, Sikinos, Syros, Tinos, and Thira or Santoríni. There are also many minor islands including Donousa, Eschati, Gyaros, Irakleia, Koufonisia, Makronisos and Schoinousa. Most of the smaller islands are uninhabited.

CLIMATE AND FOOD

The climate in the Cycladic islands is generally dry and mild. The soil of the islands is fertile, and the Cycladic agricultural produce is considered by many amongst the best on the planet. Wild herbs grow naturally on the islands, giving the summer wind the aroma of oregano and thyme.

Their products include herbs and spices, honey, wine, cheese, fruit, wheat, olive oil, and a large variety of vegetables. Each island has their own specialties to be discovered and their traditional recipes which can't be found anywhere else.

WINDS

The prevailing wind in the summer is the Meltemi blowing from the North, it begins to blow in June, blows strongest in July/August and subsides from the middle of September. In July and August, the wind blows at force 5-6 and may reach force 7-8. It may blow for 1-3 days or sometimes blow for 1 week continuously. In the other months, the wind strength is less, around force 3-4.

In the Northern Cyclades it blows from the North East, in the middle Cyclades from the North, in the Southern Cyclades it blows from the North West. In the South West islands, it is less strong, during spring and autumn, you may be faced with winds coming from the south. In general, the sailing conditions are much more demanding than in other areas of Greece.
